The Hidden Burnout Pattern in Driven Women

The Hidden Burnout Pattern in Driven Women (And Why Your Body Stops Responding)

If you feel like your body just… stopped responding after 40, you’re not imagining it.

You’re eating well.
You’re trying to take care of yourself.
Maybe you’ve even cleaned up your diet and started doing “all the right things.”

And yet…

You’re more tired than you used to be.
Your sleep isn’t as deep.
Your energy is inconsistent.
Things that used to work… don’t anymore.

For a lot of women, this is the moment where it starts to feel confusing.

Because now it’s not just what you’re doing. It’s that your body isn’t responding the way it used to.

The Pattern I See Over and Over Again

When I run a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) for women in this position, there’s a pattern that shows up again and again:

➛ Low sodium + low potassium

This is what we call a burnout pattern.

And this is where things start to make sense.

Because sodium and potassium aren’t just “electrolytes.”

They are two of the main minerals that drive:

  • energy production
  • nervous system function
  • your ability to respond to demand

So when both of those are low, your body doesn’t have the resources it needs to keep up.

This is when women start saying things like:

“I can push through, but I can’t sustain it.”
“I don’t bounce back the way I used to.”
“I feel like I’m running on empty.”

That’s not a motivation issue. That’s a capacity issue.

The Sodium-Potassium “See-Saw” That Controls Your Cells

Every single cell in your body relies on something called the sodium-potassium pump.

Its job is simple – but critical:

➛ move nutrients into the cell
➛ move waste out of the cell

I often describe this as a see-saw.

Sodium and potassium need to stay in the right balance for this system to work properly.

When they are:

  • energy production is efficient
  • the nervous system is more stable
  • metabolism is more responsive

But when that balance is off?

Cells struggle.

And when cells struggle, systems struggle.

That’s when you start to notice symptoms like:

  • fatigue that doesn’t make sense
  • anxiety or irritability
  • feeling wired but exhausted
  • poor or disrupted sleep
  • afternoon energy crashes
  • stubborn weight that won’t respond to diet and exercise

These symptoms are not random. They’re signals.

Why This Feels Like “Nervous System Dysregulation”

This is where the nervous system conversation comes in.

When sodium and potassium are low, your body doesn’t have the resources to regulate itself properly.

So instead of moving between states easily – calm, focused, active, then back to calm – you get stuck.

➛  stuck in “wired but tired”
➛  stuck in overwhelm
➛  stuck in low energy

This is often labeled as “nervous system dysregulation.”

But what I want you to understand is: this isn’t just emotional – it’s physiological

Your body isn’t overreacting. It’s under-resourced.

Why Driven Women Hit This Wall

The women I work with are not underperforming.

They are driven.

They are used to pushing through, figuring things out, and getting things done.

And for a long time, that works.

Until it doesn’t.

Because every time your body has to respond to demand, it uses minerals.

Every workout.
Every stressful situation.
Every late night.
Every time you push through when you’re already tired.

Your body pulls from its reserves.

And over time, if you’re not replenishing those minerals properly…

you end up here:

➛  low sodium
➛  low potassium
➛  low resilience

What This Looks Like in Real Life

This pattern is incredibly consistent.

It can look like:

  • needing caffeine just to function
  • crashing in the afternoon
  • waking up between 2–4am
  • feeling overwhelmed by simple things
  • reacting to supplements or new protocols
  • feeling like your body is unpredictable

And one of the biggest things I hear is:

“I feel like I’m doing everything right… but nothing is working.”

That’s not random.

That’s your body saying:

➛  “I don’t have the resources to do what you’re asking.”

What Actually Helps (And Where to Start)

This is where most people go wrong.

They try to fix this by doing more:

More supplements.
More restriction.
More effort.

But the shift doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from rebuilding capacity.

  1. Start with food

If you’re under-eating – especially protein – your body is already behind.

➛ Aim for 20–30 grams of protein per meal, three times per day

This helps stabilize blood sugar and reduces the constant demand on your system.

  1. Support sodium + potassium intentionally

This is where something like an adrenal cocktail can be incredibly helpful.

Because you’re directly supporting the minerals that are depleted — instead of guessing.

My adrenal cocktails are 4 cups of water plus ¼ tsp each of Celtic salt, cream of tartar (for potassium) and a half to one lemon squeezed.  The Celtic salt is a high mineral salt.  You could also use pink Himalayan salt but do NOT use table salt.

  1. Stop stacking inputs your body can’t handle yet

If your system is already overwhelmed…

adding more supplements can actually make things worse.

This is why some women feel worse when they “try everything.”

It’s not that those things are wrong.

➛ It’s that your body isn’t ready to use them yet.

  1. Give your nervous system a chance to regulate

This is not about “managing stress.” It’s about reducing the load on your system.

Even small things matter:

  • slowing your breathing
  • stepping out of constant “go mode”
  • creating moments where your body feels safe

This is exactly why I created the Stress-Busting Breath.

It’s a simple, 3-minute practice that helps your nervous system shift out of that high-alert state.

Because if your nervous system doesn’t feel safe, your body can’t use anything you’re giving it.

➛  If this resonates, you can start with the Stress-Busting Breath here.

  1. Stop guessing

Because guessing keeps you stuck.

This is where something like HTMA becomes incredibly valuable.

It shows you:

  • where your minerals actually are
  • how your body is functioning
  • what needs to come first

So instead of throwing things at your body, you can actually support it in the right order.

The Bottom Line

If your body feels like it’s not responding…

it’s not because you’re doing something wrong.

➛  It’s because your body doesn’t have the capacity yet.

And this burnout pattern is one of the most common reasons why.
