Why GLP-1s Stop Working (Or Make You Feel Worse After 40)

Midlife woman struggling with weight loss on GLP-1 medication and not seeing results

Why GLP-1s Don’t Work (Or Make You Feel Worse After 40)

If you’ve gone on a GLP-1 medication and it’s not working, you’re not alone.

Some women lose weight quickly.
Others plateau within a few weeks.
And some feel worse – more tired, more depleted, more disconnected from their body.

The frustrating part?

You’re often told to:

  • increase the dose
  • give it more time
  • or assume you’re doing something wrong

But what if that’s not the issue?

➛ GLP-1s don’t fix the problem – they expose it.

And if you don’t understand what they’re exposing, you’ll keep trying to force a result your body isn’t set up to give.

What GLP-1s Actually Do (And What They Don’t)

GLP-1 medications are designed to:

  • reduce appetite
  • slow digestion
  • help regulate blood sugar signaling

And for some women, that leads to weight loss. That’s why they’ve become so popular.

But here’s the part most people miss:

➛ GLP-1s change input – not function. They help you eat less.

But they don’t fix:

  • how your body produces energy
  • how your metabolism is functioning
  • or why your body may have been struggling in the first place

So if something underneath isn’t working well…

➛ eating less doesn’t fix the problem
➛ it just changes the conditions your body is operating under

And sometime, those conditions actually make things harder.

What Most Women Expect vs. What Actually Happens

Most women go into this thinking: “This is going to make things easier.”

And sometimes, at first, it does.

They eat less.
The scale moves.
It finally feels like something is working.

But then:

➛ energy starts to drop
➛ sleep gets worse
➛ workouts feel harder
➛ progress slows down

Or stops entirely. And that’s when the confusion starts.

Because now it’s:

➛ “Wait… I’m eating less… so why am I not getting better results?”

So the instinct is:

  • restrict more
  • push harder
  • increase the dose

But that’s usually not the solution.

Why GLP-1s Stop Working for Some Women

When GLP-1s don’t work – or stop working – it’s not random.

  1. Blood sugar instability is still driving the system

If your body is constantly trying to stabilize energy, suppressing appetite doesn’t fix that.

It just means you’re dealing with the same instability with less fuel.

That can show up as:

  • energy crashes
  • irritability
  • cravings later in the day

Because your body is still trying to regulate something that hasn’t been addressed.

  1. You’re already under-fueling

This is one of the biggest issues I see in midlife women.

You’re already:

  • eating clean
  • eating less
  • trying to be “good”
  • pushing through fatigue

Then appetite drops even more. At that point, your body isn’t thinking:

➛ “Let’s burn fat”

It’s thinking:

➛ “We don’t have enough — we need to conserve”

And that leads to:

  • fatigue
  • brain fog
  • slower metabolism
  • muscle loss
  • weight plateau

So it feels like the medication stopped working but your body just shifted into protection mode.

  1. Mineral depletion is limiting your ability to respond

When intake drops, nutrients often drop with it. And many midlife women are already low in:

  • sodium
  • potassium
  • magnesium

These minerals are critical for:

  • energy
  • blood sugar balance
  • nervous system regulation

If they’re low, your body doesn’t have what it needs to function properly. And no medication overrides that.

  1. Your nervous system is already under strain

If you’ve been pushing for years…

➛ managing everything
➛ handling stress
➛ ignoring your body

Your system may already be operating from:

➛ survival, not repair

And when that’s the case:

➛ your body is not prioritizing fat loss
➛ it’s prioritizing stability

So adding more pressure doesn’t create results. It creates more resistance.

The Genetics Piece (That No One Explains Clearly)

For some women, there’s another layer.

➛ Their genetics show that their body doesn’t respond well to GLP-1 signaling.

Meaning: Even if the medication is working exactly as designed, their body doesn’t use that signal efficiently.

So they might:

  • not lose much weight
  • plateau quickly
  • or feel off on it

And in those cases, increasing the dose won’t fix it.

A different approach is needed  – sometimes even different peptide pathways altogether.

Why GLP-1s Stop Working Over Time

You might see:

  • initial weight loss
  • followed by a plateau

That’s because the underlying issue was never addressed.

So once your body adapts, there’s nowhere else for the process to go.

It didn’t stop working.  It reached its limit.

What To Do If This Is You

If this sounds familiar, don’t panic – and don’t jump to another solution.

Start here:

  1. Eat enough (earlier in the day)

If you’re under-fueling, your body will not prioritize fat loss.

Focus on:

  • consistent meals
  • enough protein
  • not saving all your food for later
  1. Support your minerals

Start simple:

  • Epsom salt baths (magnesium)
  • Adrenal cocktail (sodium + potassium):  ½ tsp Celtic salt + ½ tsp cream of tartar + juice of ½ lemon in 4 cups water.

These support:

  • energy
  • blood sugar
  • nervous system balance
  1. Pay attention to sleep + energy

If you’re:

  • waking at 2–3am
  • wired but exhausted
  • relying on caffeine

That’s not something to push through.  That’s your body asking for support.

  1. Stop stacking more solutions

Adding:

  • more supplements
  • higher doses
  • more restriction

won’t fix a body that isn’t responding. Understanding what’s missing will.

The Bottom Line

GLP-1s aren’t the problem. And your body isn’t broken.

But if your body has been under-fueled, under-supported, and pushed for years, it’s not going to suddenly respond just because you eat less.

GLP-1s can reduce appetite. They can shift the input.

But they don’t fix:

  • how your body produces energy
  • how your metabolism is functioning
  • or what your body has been compensating for

So when they don’t work – or stop working – that’s not failure.

➛ that’s feedback

It’s your body showing you:

➛ something underneath hasn’t been addressed yet

And until that changes, no medication, supplement, or peptide is going to give you consistent results.

Not because you’re doing it wrong. But because your body doesn’t have what it needs to respond.
