Is It Really ADHD – Or is Your Brain “Just” Overloaded?

You’ve probably seen the headlines: ADHD diagnoses are skyrocketing—especially in midlife women. And maybe you’ve wondered if that’s what’s going on with you: do you have ADHD or is your brain overloaded?

Because lately, you…

  • Can’t stay focused
  • Lose your train of thought mid-sentence
  • Forget why you walked into a room
  • Struggle to finish any of the 14 things you started
  • Snap at your partner for breathing too loud (oops)

Or maybe you’ve already been diagnosed. Your doctor said “It’s ADHD,” handed you a prescription—and that was that. But here’s the thing no one’s really saying:

What looks like ADHD in midlife… might actually be a perfect storm of other issues.
And even if you do have ADHD? That storm can make everything 10x harder.

What’s Really Going On- Is it Really ADHD?

In my practice, I’ve seen this pattern again and again: brilliant, capable women wondering if their brain is broken because they can’t focus, remember, or follow through like they used to. But when we dig in?  The problem isn’t a “broken brain.” It’s an overloaded system. Let me break down a few of the hidden culprits behind that frazzled, foggy, forgetful feeling:

Blood Sugar Rollercoaster

When you’re under-fueled (especially skipping breakfast or living on caffeine + crumbs), your brain doesn’t get the steady fuel it needs to focus or function. Cue brain fog, distraction, and that 3 p.m. energy crash that makes you want to crawl into a closet and hide.

Mineral Depletion

Chronic stress drains key minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium—the exact ones your nervous system needs to stay balanced. Without them? You’re more anxious, less focused, and constantly on edge.

Hormone & Neurotransmitter Shifts

Estrogen helps regulate dopamine, which drives motivation, memory, and attention. So as estrogen dips during perimenopause or menopause, your brain can feel like it’s running on fumes. Not broken—just under-supported.

Gut-Brain Disruption

Here’s what most people miss: your gut is where you convert hormones and produce neurotransmitters. If your digestion is compromised (bloating, constipation, low appetite, nausea, anyone?), your brain will absolutely feel the effects.

You’re Not Lazy or Unmotivated—You’re Just Leaking Energy

So no, it’s not “just ADHD.”

It’s a system overload.
A perfect storm.
And it’s fixable.

What Can You Actually Do About It?

Here’s what I recommend to clients in this situation—not as a giant overhaul, but as doable first steps to calm the chaos and support the systems that keep your brain sharp:

Balance Blood Sugar

  • Eat 20–30g of protein three times a day (not just dinner!)
  • Don’t skip meals—especially breakfast
  • Add fiber + healthy fats to meals to keep blood sugar steady

Replenish Minerals

  • Try daily adrenal cocktails (a mix of coconut water, mineral salt, and fresh-squeezed lemon juice)
  • Add Epsom salt baths 2–3x/week for magnesium
  • Consider an HTMA test to see exactly where you’re depleted

Support Your Nervous System

  • Get outside first thing in the morning for sunlight and circadian rhythm support
  • Use short “reset” tools to help release stress (not manage it): breathwork, body scans, EFT, or just stepping away for 2 minutes
  • Protect your peace like it’s your job—because it kind of is

Address Gut & Hormonal Imbalances

  • Rule out gut issues like low stomach acid or H. pylori (I love the GI-MAP for this)
  • Focus on protein, mineral-rich foods, and bitter veggies to support detox pathways
  • Be cautious with fasting or cutting too many carbs—your brain needs fuel to function

You don’t need to push harder. You need to support smarter. Because what you’re feeling isn’t a character flaw—it’s a call for a new approach.
